Abstract

Climate change has become a widely acknowledged and major global challenge in the 21st century. This phenomenon is likely to intensify in the future if timely measures are not taken to deal with it. The two different but interlinked approaches that are used to meet climate change-induced challenges are climate change mitigation and adaptation. Climate change mitigation centers on addressing the root cause of climate change i.e., the sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As for climate adaptation, it entails taking measures that are critical to protecting the environment, populations, and the overall ecosystem from the adverse effects of climate change. Both approaches can be implemented in various ways. One of those is the use of innovative technologies that play a significant role in addressing the threats posed by climate change. There are a number of technologies that can be used for this purpose, however, this paper focuses on the role of the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and drone technologies in implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. Furthermore, the paper looks at the challenges faced in implementing such technologies, proposing a way forward in a society like Pakistan’s.
