THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA USE AND SLEEP DISTURBANCE AMONG PHYSIOTHERAPY STUDENTS IN LAHORE: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

Abstract

Background: social media now a day is widely popular. It is fast and irresistible. With all the, technological advancements, social media hold an important place in an individual’s life. In today’s world, media is seen as one of the rising contributors of sleep disturbance. With the new trend of 24/7 services, mobile phones, media and web are the main contributors of sleep disorders in teenagers and young adults.

Objective: To determine the association between social media use and sleep disturbance among physiotherapy students in Lahore: a cross sectional study

Methods: It was a cross sectional study in which data were collected online from 138 physiotherapy students of various government as well as private institutes of Lahore, Pakistan. Study was completed within 6 months after the approval of synopsis. Inclusion Criteria contained both male & female students of physiotherapy profession, any study year, between age group 19-32 years. Data was collected through Pittsburg sleep quality index (PSQI) for sleep quality and for social media it was self-reported questionnaire.

Results: Total participants were 138 out of which 73 were from the age group 19-23, 59 were from 24-26 and 6 were from age group 27-32 years. Among all, 47 were males and 91 were females. In the whole sample, 1(.7%) used social media for (0-30) minutes per day, 9(6.5%) for (31-60) minutes per day, 25(18.1%) for (61-120) minutes per day and 103(74.6%) use social media for (121+) minutes per day. The results exhibited that P-value was 0.00(<0.05) which meant that there was a strong association between social media usage and sleep quality among physiotherapy students of Lahore.

Conclusion: A significantly strong and positive association was found between sleep quality and use of social media use in Physiotherapy students. Study showed that sleep quality disturbance increases with increase in social media usage.
