Abstract

This paper investigates how Anne Sexton deals with the concept of death in her poem, “The Truth the Dead Know.” The poem is examined on four levels of stylistics: phonological, graphological, grammatical, and semantic. The results show that Anne Sexton’s poem follows the patterns of a confessional elegy. She employs various rhetorical devices, such as metaphor, simile, and symbolism, to delve into the meaning of life and death. She considers death a medium for cultivating one’s soul. The use of ABAB rhyming enhances the readability of the poem. The past and present tenses are used to connect the present and the past. This poem is one of the most comforting death poems, focusing on impersonal truth that must be acknowledged.
