Development of critical thinking for enhancing writing skills of post graduate English language learners in universities of Punjab, Pakistan

Abstract

This research investigates how developing critical thinking affects the writing skills of postgraduate students. English language learners in universities in Punjab, Pakistan. The introduction explores the origins of critical thinking, dating back to Socratic methods, and underscores its significance in both education and daily life. The literature review discusses the essential role of critical thinking in problem-solving. Intellectual growth and its integration with writing skills for English learners. The objective of the study is to quantitatively assess the connection between critical thinking and writing skills among postgraduate English students in Pakistan. Data was collected from 291 students across three universities in Punjab using a multi-grade sampling technique. The Critical Thinking and Writing Scale (CTWS) was employed to evaluate the students' skills. Data analysis, performed using SPSS 17, involved independent sample t tests and Pearson r tests. The results revealed no significant difference in critical thinking or writing skills between male and female students. However, there was notable variation in these skills depending on the length of postgraduate study. The findings indicate that critical thinking is vital for improving writing skills and should be incorporated early in the educational process. The study recommends hiring qualified instructors and utilizing various aids to enhance critical thinking and writing skills in English language learners.
