Introduction: Nonverbal communication (NVC) has an impact on the effectiveness of interpersonal interactions. By understanding the shades of NVC, we can enhance communication skills and build better relationships in professional settings.
Objective: 1. To explore the level of NVC in effective communication among various professionals, including doctors, dentists, and non-medical personnel. 2- To identify factors influencing NVC skills. 3- To identify the association of experience with nonverbal communication skills.
Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted over two months, involving 171 participants recruited via stratified sampling from educational institutions. Participants included doctors, dentists, teachers, and nurses. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire shared via Google Forms via email for assessing NVC skills. Demographic information, including gender and designation, was also collected. Written informed consent was obtained, and the study received ethical approval from the institutional review board.
Results: The average NVC score was 176.47 ± 17.16. Female participants represented 71.1% of the sample, and 55% of participants had professional experience. The stratified analysis showed that professionals (19.1%) demonstrated significantly higher NVC skills compared to learners (3.9%) (p = 0.006). Gender and qualification levels also revealed important differences in NVC scores, although not statistically significant.
Conclusion: The study highlights the important role of professional experience in enhancing NVC skills. These findings emphasize the importance of training and continuous professional development to improve nonverbal communication skills. This will ultimately lead to more active and vicarious professional interactions.
